One Choice is one couple’s journey through the decision to pursue parenthood.
Raise Her Up exists in the moment that one character comes to their final decision to embrace parenthood with their partner. They talk to their partner in their head, reflecting on a recent visit with their sister’s family, and slowly start to imagine a blissful future without their own childhood’s pain. Throughout the song, so scared of the enormity of the decision, they go back and forth if they are even going to tell their partner any of these thoughts—but by the end of the song, their mind made up, they step into the light and start the conversation exactly as it came to them.
In The Storyteller, the couple has just received news about their pregnancy that causes them to have to make a very difficult decision. In a dissociative state, the singer pulls themself out of time, and imagines themself a writer penning the story of their little one’s life. In a lullaby to all that they could have been, they sing their little one to sleep as their heartbeat comes to a conclusion.
In Seahorse, the singer comes to terms with their loss, and find a way to have hope for a future in parenthood, no matter what form that may ultimately take.
Seahorse and The Storyteller libretti written by Jude O'Dell.
