SongSlam Premiere of "Seahorse"

2.24.24

SongSlam 2024! I had heard about Sparks and Wiry Cries’ SongSlams for a few years, but had never been able to make it to the closest events, some multiple states away.  I was so excited when I found out that Dr. Coates had organized one to take place in Indiana, right here at JSOM’s Auer Hall! I walked away from the event so deeply fulfilled and inspired by the breadth of styles, approaches, and voices that we heard in that hall—all unique, memorable, and sparkling with their own special touches that set them apart.

I was very lucky to get to premiere my song “Seahorse” with my dear friends Aaron Murphy and Joshua Catanzaro, showing Jude O'Dell heart-healing text to an audience of over 100. There will be a recording, and I will be posting it soon along with a bit of a reflection on what this song, and this compositional and collaborative process, has meant to me. It’s a bit of a wild story, starting at my favorite place in the world where I broke ground on the libretto in July, and stretches across the past seven months: a story that includes 27 yellow jackets, some earth-shattering breakthroughs, and a love both of myself and others unlike I’ve ever known before. I look forward to posting it soon :)

More later 💜
